Is the following question appropriate or inappropriate and why? So, tell me about your family life. What do you do in your spare time?
A.
Appropriate. This is asked all of the time in interviews
B.
Inappropriate. Has nothing to do with applicant’s ability to do the job, but by asking this question it inquires about prohibited grounds such as marriage and family status. Also, the second part of the question is explicitly asking about personal time away from work which may invite other prohibited grounds such as religion.
C.
Inappropriate. Should ask candidate instead "do you have a family life and if so please tell me about it, as well as all of the personal details about your personal life that have nothing to do with work or this job, so that I can know more about you outside of the context related to this hiring decision, this organization, or anything else relevant to employment or hiring you"
D.
Appropriate because it assesses applicants' skills outside of work effectively
