The reason for this was because Dante Alighieri had many
enemies. Many of his enemies were citizens
of Florence. According to him, these
people were responsible for corruption in Italy and they came from the
government and the church. In the
Inferno, he envisions many terrible punishments for these people who have done
so much wrong.
