the distance from p to q is 59 units

how far away from 0 is -28 ?

-28 + 28 = 0, so you have 28 from p to 0.

now how far away from 0 is 31 ?

31 - 31 = 0, so you have 31 from 0 to q.

add 28 + 31 = 59

pq = 59
