Even though the Babylonians used the zero to refer te absence of something, the Indians were the first to use the zero as a symbol and in Mathematics and Science, particularly for arithmetic operations.
The first Indian scholar to use it was Pingala, who used the Sanscrit word śūnya to refer to the zero or "absent".
