The cases of Griggs vs Duke Power Co. in 1971 and United States vs Paradise in 1987, laid the foundation for determining affirmative action towards groups of ethnic minorities employees. Both cases ruled that the implicated companies employment requirements were not associated in any way to an applicants ability to perform a job. Therefore, they were discriminatory toward African American employees.
