What is the meaning of the Hindu belief that “God is one but a wise man knows him by many names”?

Hm well here’s what I got:
I believe it means, That if the god went I guess in a way ‘Undercover’ you’ll know him but in many different names ( the wise man is wise so maybe he knows it’s him?)
