Answer:  Osmosis determines how much water enters the cell, and how much water leaves it. Salt water fish cannot live in a freshwater environment because they have hypertonic cells which take the water out of the cell, and keeps more salt inside the cell. without salt the hypertonic cells will turn hypotonic which do not work well with the fishes body structure, they will not survive
