Fossils are the preserved remains of dead and decaying organism found within sedimentary rock layers. For a fossil to be desirable for preservation, certain conditions must persist such as the presence of hard parts, lack of an oxidizing environment and so on.

 During sedimentation, weathered rock materials, eroded are transported in a sedimentary basin where by become compacted and lithified to form sedimentary rocks.

  • The materials brought in for sedimentation have traveled on the surface or move within the ocean.
  • Apart from rock materials, parts of organisms are also contained in the mass.
  • When these materials gets into a basin of deposition, with rapid deposition, they become compacted.
  • The remains of the organisms becomes trapped in sedimentary rock layers and are protected from decay by natural agents.
  • This way fossils are preserved.
