[tex]x^{-m}= \frac{1}{x^m} [/tex]

basically the reciprocal happens

this is because
x^3 for example=[tex] \frac{x*x*x}{1} [/tex]=[tex] \frac{x*x*x*x}{x} [/tex]

now if yo did x^-1, then that would be
[tex] \frac{1}{x} [/tex]

so

[tex](4xy)^{-1}= \frac{1}{4xy} [/tex]
