Answer: y = -2 & x = 8

Step 1: Multiply the first equation by 2 so that the equations cancel out the y
2 ( x + 2y ) = 4

Step 2: Simplify
2x +4y = 8

Step 3: Add equations
(2x +4y = 8)
+ ( x -4y = 16)
————————-
3x = 24

Step 4: Simply by dividing both sides by 3
x = 8

Step 5: Substitute x into either equation & simply
x + 2y = 4
(8) + 2y = 4
8+2y = 4
2y = -4
y = -2
