It failed because not enough states ratified the Amendment. 3/4 states were needed to ratify the Amendment in order for it to be passed. At the time, 35 states had ratified the Equal Rights Amendment. 3 more states were needed to pass the Equal Rights Amendment but no new ratifications were made by the other states, resulting in its failure. It also failed because of its vague wordiness, which caused many people to fear the possible unintended effects that would occur if the Amendment was passed.
