How did calligraphy affect ancient China?

Answer: In ancient China, calligraphy was a means of communication, a way to write things down.  Even emperors practiced until they good at writing calligraphy. Of course emperors could appoint someone to write for them, but the ability to write in calligraphy showed control and inner peace. It was a sign of status.
