Mercantilism served to improve the economy
of Great Britain by requiring the products of
the Americas to come directly to it at minimal
value and that the American population would
have to buy British manufactures at inflated
prices. Conversely, this hurt both nascent
industry in the Americas and forced
Americans who wanted to trade with more
local neighbors to engage in smuggling
operations.
