Hawaii previously had a monarchical type of government before having democracy. The reigning dynasty was of Kamehameha. This was ended through a coup d'etat on January 17, 1893 in an island known as Oahu. The US invaded the island and was officially declared an independent republic. Later on, the revolutionaries initiated the annexation from the US which was achieved in 1898.
