The age of the bedrock increases the further you get away from the mid atlantic ridge because it is at the ridge that the new bedrock is formed. At the Ridge, the diverging plates cause magma to rise up and harden, forming new bedrock. As this happens, the older bedrock is pushed outwards, further and further away from the Ridge.
