I'd start by adding 5 to both sides of the equation. That would make the equation easier.
[tex]\boldsymbol{\sqrt{2x}-5=3}}[/tex]
[tex]\boldsymbol{\sqrt{2x}=2}[/tex]
The next step is to get rid of the radical sign.
Which operation will undo the square root? Squaring.
So that's why we square both sides:
[tex]\boldsymbol{2x=4}[/tex]
And Now we just divide both sides by 2
[tex]\boldsymbol{x=2}[/tex]
