Carl von Linné, also known as Carolus Linnaeus, is well known for being the first to organize organisms in a hierarchy of taxonomic ranks. He also created the binomial nomenclature or the binomial system, in which each species is given a name with two words in latin: one related to its genus followed by another one related to the species (a specific name).
