roots can be written as fraction exponents. An exponent of 1/2 means the square root.
[tex] (12 x^{4})^{1/2} = \sqrt{12 x^{4} } \\ \\ \sqrt{12 x^{4} } = \sqrt{3*4*x^{2}*x^{2}} = 2x^{2} \sqrt{3} [/tex]
