what role did the church play in the daily life during the middle ages?

the church stiked fear during the middle ages because time felt like it was going back not moving forward.. not being religious meant death or if you where another religion sometimes they would make you convert or death was the only option. scientist and people who studied the earth and plants were given death penatly because church officials thought they were not believing in god
