Yams are generally confused with sweet potatoes but are not related to each other. Yams belong to the family Dioscoreaceae and are edible tubers. These are native to Asia and Africa.
Yams were both an important agricultural product and a mainstay of artistic creation for the Ossissa lgbo people of Nigeria. These people believe yams to be sacred and celebrate yam festivals. The women porters used to make images and were considered symbolic. This was a tradition to signify the importance of agricultural crops in their culture and tradition. By celebrating Yam festivals, they gave tribute to God for providing crops in large amount.
