The Sphinx guarded the entrance to the city of Thebes. It asked a riddle to every traveller to allow them entrance. If they guessed correctly, they were free to pass as they wished. Otherwise, they were devoured. Eventually, Oedipus solved the Sphinx's riddle. In turn, she killed herself.
