Missouri Compromise, proposed by Henry Clay, tried to resolve the slavery problem as it banned slavery in much of the previous Louisiana Territory except for Missouri.

In year 1820, there were increasing tensions within the United States on issue of Slavery and during same period of time, The Congress passed a law to order to add Missouri as a slave state.
Missouri applied for the first time for full statehood in year 1818 and it made clear that it wanted to enter Union as a Slave trade. The bid of Missouri came into force in year 1820 which was to allow slavery in within its borders and this started a bitter debate which took place within Congress which was already divided Fixations related to Anti-Slavery and Pro Slavery.
It was speaker of the Congress, Henry Clay who proposed admission of Missouri as a slave state in the Union to keep up with the balance between Slave and Free States, Maine which used to be part of Massachusetts and it became a free state. Because of this compromise, Henry Clay tried to resolve the issue of slavery because slavery was then banned in Louisiana territory except Missouri.
