The Treaty of Fort Laramie signed in 1851 was especially significant for Western expansion since it enabled the safe travel of white immigrants on the Oregon trail upon the guarantee of Native Americans. The treaty also served as a peace treaty for the eight tribes that are often at odds with each other.
