(Note: I am going to solve using the elimination method)

1. I am going to multiply the first equation by -8 so I can cancel out y.
-8(-6x + y = -12)    ---> 48x - 8y = 96
    7x + 8y = 14    --->   7x + 8y = 14

2. Cancel out Y and add the two polynomials
48x - 8y = 96
7x + 8y = 14
55x = 110

3. Solve
55x = 110
55        55
x = 2

4. Substitute into either original equation and solve for other variable
-6(2) + y = -12
-12 + y = -12
+ 12        +12
y = 0

5. Substitute Ordered Pairs (Optional)
-6(2) + (0) = -12
-12 = -12

You have to get -6x on the right side because that’s how the equation is to be in the first place and to do that you have to add it to itself then to the -12.
