Scalawags are from the North I think. And Carpetbaggers are from the South.

Carpetbaggers - Northerners, who moved South after the Civil War.  The name comes from their luggage which was made of carpet.

Scalawags - 
Southerners who supported Reconstruction for personal economic gain.
