Greek--the word comes for the Greek language meaning gloomy or hate. The river running to the underworld in Greek religion was called the River Styx.

The River Styx carried souls to the underworld by Charon. It is also stated in Greek mythology that the gods swore their oath to Zeus at the River Styx.
