It's because Mercury, the planet, travels around the sun the fastest and has the shortest year. Hope this helps. :)
The Romans knew seven bright objects in the sky: the Sun, the moon, and the five brightest planets. They named the planets after the most important gods. Because Mercury was the fastet planet as it orbited the sun, it named after the messenger:GOD MERCURY. Hope this will help :P.
