Faber gives Montag a type of earpiece that allows the two of them to hear each other. With the earpiece in, Montag can hear Faber give him instructions. This is important because Montag is worried that Beatty will try to talk him into giving up the books and the knowledge.
This situation is a little ironic because of the way Mildred's use of the ear pieces are described.
