What is the purpose of the appearance and speech of the messenger in scene 2 on the tragedy of Macbeth and who might have sent it?

The messenger appears to warn Lady Macduff that someone is coming to harm her. The purpose is to show that Lady Macduff has nowhere else to go and no reason to be afraid, since she has done nothing wrong, and this is shown in her response to the messenger's speech.
