Because genetically modified seeds are patented, farmers cannot keep any of the seed themselves but must purchase seeds each year from companies such as Monsanto. Farmers all purchase their crop seeds to plant and then farm each year for profit and food. The seeds the farmers use are patented from other companies so they are not able to try and keep the seeds and sell them as their own product.
